Introduction

Many people are honest in their intentions and their actions. Some are not. The presence of this some necessitates an entity to create rules and to monitor them. The purpose of the rules is to ensure that participants in employer-sponsored plans are not being taken advantage of. The American government enacted the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) in 1974 and the Pension Protection Act (PPA) in 2006 to help with this need to level the playing field and to keep all of the players honest.
