Manufacturing is a major component of the industrial economy. The world makes and consumes a huge amount of stuff; almost all of which is provided by an unsustainable linear economy. Virgin materials are mined, extracted, processed, and manufactured into components, which are then assembled into consumer products. In a consumer market dominated by search engines and online marketplaces, price is king. We have become addicted to cheap throwaway products. They are clicked online, arrive at the door by white van, work for a while, and when they break, they get junked either direct to landfill or into a recycling system.
