We are living in fast-moving times in the energy sector. The world energy systems are continuously increasing in integration and complexity. Multiple objectives of ensuring energy security, providing affordable energy to all citizens, and spurring competitiveness while mitigating environmental externalities coexist. This is increasingly true also for the European Union. In the IEA World Energy Outlook 2016 central scenario, primary energy demand in the European Union declines by 13% from 2014 to 2040, while electricity increases its share in transport, buildings, and industrial uses.
