The Exchange Server 2016 mailbox server role hosts the mailbox databases for an organization. Mailbox databases host user and shared mailboxes, as well as the mailboxes for meeting rooms and equipment resources. Mailbox databases also host the contents of public folders and the public folder hierarchy in public folder mailboxes, which are also known as modern public folders. This method of public folder data storage was first implemented in Exchange Server 2013 and is different from Exchange Server 2010 and earlier, which used dedicated public folder databases.
