If there is such a thing as a personal hell, and if, for whatever reason, we piss off the Big Guy before we die, we’re fairly certain that we will spend eternity in either a Home Depot or a RONA. The only real question we have is whether His wrath will place us in plumbing supplies, home decor, or flooring.

Neither of us are the handyman type. Even the words “home renovation” are enough to send shivers up our spines. And yet, despite our failed relationships with power tools, we both love one kind of construction: portfolio construction.

We enjoy crafting portfolios not only because it involves multicoloured pie charts (Russell’s always had a soft spot for multicoloured pie charts) but also because the process involves so much more than running a piece of wood through a table saw and hoping not to lose any fingers. Portfolio construction is — or should be — a highly individualized, creative exercise that takes into consideration many factors: economics, history, statistics, and psychology among them.
