Poetry is not a luxury; it is a vital part of our lives (Lorde, 1984). We write, perform, and listen to poetry to help us explore, celebrate, explain, and rage against the human condition. Poetry is a form of writing characterized by attention to the line, language use, form, alliteration, metaphor, meter, rhythm, simile, structure, and syntax. The way it looks on the page and the sound and use of language are distinguishing features of a poem.
