1.1 INTRODUCTION

An experimental stress analyst must have thorough understanding of stresses and strains developed in any structural member. Therefore, relationships between deformations, strains, and stresses developed in a body are derived in this chapter. Further generalized Hooke’s law, equilibrium equations and compatibility equations, and Airy’s stress functions for determining stresses at any point in a member subjected to known loads/stresses on its boundary form the text of this chapter.
