Getting the geometries from the US Census Bureau and exploring these in QGIS

The shapefiles can be downloaded from the US Census Bureau. Go to the https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger-cart-boundary.html website and download the 500k file, which is the most precise one (we've also included this one in the data directory for this chapter). When you unpack this zip file, you'll see a number of files, of which the interesting one is the cb_2015_us_county_500k.shp file. This is a shapefile in ArcGIS format, which contains all the polygons (and some additional data) representing all the individual districts in the US.
