Vision and visual perception

When my son was quite young, we frequently visited the nature museum. The large exhibit of animals in their wild settings (preserved through taxidermy), both fascinated and terrified him. To his inexperienced mind, the visual information was confusing and consequently scary. While he could identify many of the animals he saw, how they related to each other and to him was less clear. These were not the animals he'd seen on the pages of his books. They looked like real things because, like him, they had volume and their furs or feathers were evidently material, like his skin and clothes.
