Chapter 6. Advanced Provisioning
IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager is key to the new automation solutions from
IBM. It uses best practices to automate complex IT processes, including
deploying servers and software, allocating storage, and configuring networks.
This, in turn, will lead to reducing overall cost and cutting the potential for human
error. IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager is the next step towards policy-based
automatic reconfiguration.
IT staff are sometimes forced to over-provision IT resources, including storage
capacity, based on worst-case, peak demands. In addition, the introduction of
storage area networks has added to that challenge, making storage capacity
provisioning a very labor intensive process and requiring a significant number of
individual steps, not to mention an undesirable amount of an administrator’s
time. As a result, the IT environment can become inflexible, expensive,
underutilized and difficult to manage.
This chapter introduces IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager and describes the
context that triggered the inception of the IBM Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator. We
provide general information, focused on storage provisioning, with these topics:
򐂰 An overview of IBM Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator
򐂰 An overview of IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager
򐂰 A complete description of the IBM Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator architecture,
including IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager
򐂰 A description of the integration of IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager with IBM
TotalStorage Productivity Center
