The fabulous bull run of Dorling Kindersley’s organically expanding universe effectively peaked after eight years, in 1996. It was certainly the last year when growth came easily to us, when it didn’t require hoisting by artificial means, by cutting and scrimping and saving and hustling down other avenues to bolster the sales. It was the last of the best of times. We were still having fun.
