Aside from The Taste of Wine, there were two other books being worked on during those first months in the Kennington studio – the aforementioned Book of Photography by John Hedgecoe, and The Origin of Johnny. All three were moving ahead well in terms of their design, but the same could not be said of the texts. John Hedgecoe’s photographs were ideal for demonstrating to amateurs how to raise their skills to a more professional level but, although he knew what he wanted to say about technique, composition and so forth, he was frustratingly unable to articulate it on paper.
