I2.1. Context
The emergence of video acquisition and processing systems plays an important role in our daily lives. The uses of video are evolving accordingly with our needs to automate the process of extracting information from video (behavior analysis, recognition, tracking, etc.). The main objective of this part of the book is to see how to design models and systems that can represent and interpret the visual content of a scene. More specifically, we address the analysis of emotional states communicated by facial expressions.
Nowadays, there is a real interest in technologies that can analyze human behavior from video streams. The analysis of human behavior – through a sequence of images – is mainly based on the extraction of visual characteristics. Communication is associated with movements appearing in body parts such as the head, face, hands, arms, torso and legs. Each person expresses body language (gestures, looks, facial mimics, postures) and reacts to that of the other. These behaviors play an important role in the communication of information and the social interaction. Gaze orientation, body posture and facial expressions provide information to the other person about their respective interests, intentions, attitudes and emotional states.
