This may be the most basic tip in this book. How-
ever, during my workshops, I find that I need to
remind novice photographers of the benefits of
the technique of shooting both horizontal and
vertical pictures of a subject.
In appropriate situations, I shoot a subject both
ways. I did that when I was photographing this
little girl in Panama so that I would have a choice
of pictures to use in my books and magazine ar-
ticles. I also used this technique so that I would
give art directors a choice when it comes to using
the pictures in a publication, because sometimes
there is only room on a page for a horizontal pic-
ture, or vice versa. In fact, you may be surprised at
how much you like an alternative version!
Shooting a subject both ways saves you from say-
ing, “I wish I had taken a vertical (or horizontal)
picture of the subject,” after the photo session.
Here’s the horizontal shot of the little girl. It’s OK,
but I like the vertical one much better. Still, it’s
good to have the choice.
