If you watch music videos on television or read
fashion magazines, you may have noticed that
some of the images look off-balance—tilted down
to the left or right. According to my good friend,
professor emeritus at Rochester Institute of Tech-
nology, Dr. Richard Zakia, tilting the camera
down to the left or right creates a sense of disequi-
librium, and draws extra attention to a picture.

I photographed the cyclist shown on these two-
pages here at New York’s Coney Island. At a quick
glance, you can see the difference between the
fairly static shot on the preceding page (taken with
the camera held level) with the picture shown on
this page, which has more visual appeal (taken us-
ing the disequilibrium technique).

For instance, take a close look at the Photoshop
disequilibrium effect I created from my straight
shot of this young woman, and you’ll notice that
her earrings are defying gravity.
