If you are on a tight budget and can afford only
one light, here is an idea. Use a reflector on a stand
(or have a friend hold the reflector) and position
it opposite the one hot light (shown here in a soft-
box) so that the light bounces onto the other side
of the subject’s face. You can read more about re-
flectors in Lesson 22.

Getting back to professional photographers, I
took this picture of a model in a professional stu-
dio. The lighting is OK, but in this example, it’s
not as creative as the lighting you can get with a
basic three-light kit. Sure, I could have created
more dramatic lighting. I am simply trying to
show you that bigger and more expensive are not
always better.
I took this picture of my niece, Brook, with a
one-light-and-reflector setup. I used a $9 piece of
black cloth as my background. Professional back-
grounds, like the ones I used in the preceding pic-
tures, can cost $200 or more.
