2.3 Structured Growth of Facilities Management in China (1992–2022)

Yu Qingxin

Introduction

The year 1992 was an extremely important year for China. Mr. Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China’s reform and opening up, visited Wuchang, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shanghai, and made important speeches along the way. He proposed that China should firmly follow the market economy and insist on reform and opening up. The impact of this southern tour on China was enormous, and it triggered the golden 30 years of China’s reform and opening-up.

The year 2022 is also an extremely important year but it is not a very good year. We call it the year of calamity. China is experiencing the third year of the epidemic, there are great challenges and changes in all aspects of the national economy.

In the 30 years from 1992 to 2022, China’s facilities management and the Chinese economy have experienced very similar development context, which is structural growth. In 1992, we lagged behind the world in all areas of society, and there were still blanks in many fields. Over the 30 years, China has developed rapidly in many different areas, and emerged to lead and even surpass the world in many fields with the help of the global internet economy. The country enjoyed the best golden decade of development. This rings true with China’s facilities management, which has gone through a very similar historical development process.
