I’VE BEEN FIRED—MORE THAN ONCE. The first time was during the first Clinton Administration, when I was a Capitol Hill press secretary working for US Congressman Peter DeFazio from Oregon. I had left another press secretary job with US Congressman Peter Deutsch from South Florida after a year and a half to join DeFazio’s team. Making only $20,000 a year with Deutsch, the raise to $25,000 was incentive enough to switch Peters.
