This book began as an expository article for professional mathe-
maticians (Ash and Gross, 2000) about the proof of Fermat’s Last
Theorem. We received so many comments about that article that we
decided to expand it into a book, filling in the necessary background
so that more readers would be able to understand the beauty of the
mathematics involved.
Along the way, our book was enormously improved by the com-
ments of many people, among them Fedor Andrianov, Alexandra
Ash, Ellie Ash, Jonathan Reiss, Rosemary Reiss, Karl Rubin, and
two anonymous readers. We thank Henri Darmon for help with the
chapter on Fermat’s Last Theorem, and Klaus Peters for suggesting
the idea of “road maps” to keep the reader oriented, as well as for
many other helpful criticisms. Many thanks to Barry Mazur for his
Preface. We are grateful to David Rohrlich for answering various
number theory questions of ours over the years. We give special
thanks to our ever-helpful editors, Vickie Kearn and Terri O’Prey,
and to our excellent copyeditor, Steven Pisano.
Finally, we would like to thank our immediate families for their
loving support during the writing of this book. They have provided
us with environments in which our work could flourish.
