AS THE EARLIER CHAPTERS HAVE SHOWN, stress has a great deal to do with why we don’t feel loved or aren’t able to make those we care about feel loved. Think of stress in much the same way as you think of body temperature: Both temperature and stress are states of balance within the body. In order for us to feel and be our best, each needs to be neither too high nor too low. When we are outside a functional range of stress, or a “zone of well-being,” we are unlikely to make wise decisions, resolve challenging issues, or make meaningful connections with others.
