8 High-Power Fiber Lasers

8.1 Introduction

The development of high-power fiber lasers was fuelled by the maturation of active and passive fiber technologies combined with the availability of optical components such as bright laser diodes beam combiners, fiber Bragg gratings, isolators, etc. One of the main advantages of high-power fiber lasers over the other type of high-power lasers is their superior beam quality at high powers. For the same collimated beam size, higher beam quality radiation results in smaller spot size at the workpiece. Alternatively, for the same spot size at the workpiece, higher beam quality requires smaller and therefore lighter focusing beam optics.
