4.1. Introduction
In this chapter, we will describe different types of fiber optic cable that have been developed for a wide range of applications, including enhanced distance, optical amplification and attenuation, dispersion and polarization management, and other areas. Future optical fiber designs, still several years away from commercial use, will also be discussed.
