7 System Design and Architecture

Although this book is not intended to be an engineering guide to system design, some understanding of the process provides a good foundation for anyone working with any aspect of fiber optics, be it planning, network design, installation, or maintenance. A summary of the design process is given here; a complete design handbook can be found with reference [1].

The proper design of a fiber-optics system, or any communications system for that matter, follows the flow illustrated in Fig. 7.1. The process is iterative in that candidate designs are tried and analyzed and adjusted until the intended operating requirements are met.
