Preface
The FileMaker database product has been around for two decades now, longer than Microsoft Excel and almost as long as Microsoft Word. Moreover, it has been cross-platform (Mac and Windows) since the days of Windows 3.1. From the beginning, FileMaker has continually evolved, adding functionality and improving performance while retaining much of the essential ease of use that thrust it to the forefront of database products from its earliest days. We've been involved with FileMaker Pro throughout most of its history, from Dennis's time in the Claris product development organization starting in 1988 and Ray's work as a FileMaker solution provider and consultant over the past decade (including winning the FileMaker Excellence Award for Leadership and Technical Excellence in FileMaker Pro in 2005).
The FileMaker Pro product family encompasses a variety of packages, including FileMaker Pro 9, FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. In essence, there are two categories of FileMaker products: development/end user (Pro and Advanced) and deployment (the Server products). This book covers the development/end user products — FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced — the place(s) where you create, modify, and (most often) use your databases.
