Managerial Responsibilities of the Director
Milos Forman told his directing class at Columbia that the director had to inhabit two chairs: one for the artistic/creative side, the other for the managerial/logistical side. The trick to being a good director, he said, is to develop an ass big enough to sit in both chairs at the same time.
The elements of preproduction and production that must occupy the director from the second chair begin months before shooting.
