Preparation of Tetrafluoroethylene and Other Monomers

Abstract

Fluorinated monomers have unusual properties, which require special manufacturing equipment and procedures for their preparation. In this chapter, synthesis and properties of major monomers for polymerization of non-melt processible fluoroplastics are discussed, including those used to modify the homopolymers. This chapter reviews the synthesis, purification processes and properties of various fluoropolymers such as tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, perfluoropropyl and perfluoroalkyl vinyl ethers, and chlorotrifluoroethylene. These are the important monomers that play a predominant role in the preparation of polytetrafluoroethylene.
