Theme—The name Kommunalka means “communal apartment” – an apartment shared by two or more families of the kind that was widespread in the Soviet Union until the 1980s.

Origin of the Theme—Throughout the Soviet reign, there was a critical short supply of urban housing in comparison to the needs of the growing city population. The intensive urbanization and massive industrialization of the USSR in the 20th century added a huge burden on existing housing apartments.
