Glossary of terms

Activity Terminology used in a social accounting matrix (SAM) to describe a grouping of establishments that produce one or more types of products using a similar production process. Agriculture is an example of an activity. (Chapter 9)

Agent-based modeling A computational tool that models the actions or interaction of “agents” (i.e., people) and allows for the exploration of dynamic mechanisms that link individual behavior to overall outcomes among populations. (Chapter 13, see reference for Allender et al., 2016)

Arable A term to describe land capable of being cultivated for crop production. (Chapter 6)
