Abstract:

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a positive opinion for the claim: ‘Consumption of saturated fat increases blood cholesterol concentrations; consumption of mono- and/or polyunsaturated fat in replacement of saturated fat contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol concentrations’. As a result the following claim has been authorised for use in the EU: ‘Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats in the diet contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels [MUFA and PUFA are unsaturated fats]/[oleic acid is an unsaturated fat]’.
