Abstract:

Meat and fish are popular and important contributors to many nutrients in the European diet. They are a significant and reliable source of protein in average diets, and also have a nutrient profile that makes them valuable sources of particular vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Meat contains iron in a form which is well absorbed (haem iron), and meat also contributes to iron nutrition by enhancing the absorption of iron from other foods.
