Performance Management

Quite a bit of confusion exists around the term performance management—much of it centered around the idea of a performance review, which is only one element in the overall process.

The following quote from Patrick Lencioni’s book, The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business, does a great job of simplifying and explaining this critical organizational activity: “Essentially performance management is the series of activities that ensures that managers provide employees with clarity about what is expected of them, as well as regular feedback about whether they are adequately meeting those expectations.”
