The homogeneous soil halfspace addressed in Chapter 2 represents one limiting case of a site. The other one consists of a homogeneous soil layer of finite depth resting on rigid rock. To calculate the dynamic response of a massless rigid basemat on the surface of a soil layer for all motions (Fig. 3-1), the truncated semi-infinite cones of the halfspace can be generalized.
