In the two previous books by the author (Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction, Prentice-Hall, 1985, and Soil-Structure-Interaction Analysis in Time Domain, Prentice-Hall, 1988) the emphasis is placed on rigorous methods to model the unbounded soil in the frequency and time domains. These procedures to solve the complicated boundary- and initial-value problem in three-dimensional elastodynamics with sophisticated semi-analytical and numerical techniques with their mathematical complexity obscure the physical insight; these belong more to the discipline of applied computational mechanics than to civil engineering.
