11.1 Introduction

Human-computer interaction (HCI) emerged as a distinct discipline in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Carroll, 2016, p. 21). While the study and design of interactions between humans and computers have been ongoing since the advent of computers (Dix, 2010; Grudin, 2011), the establishment of HCI as a discipline gained momentum during this period, marked by several landmarks (Grudin, 1990, 2005, 2011).
