Digital manipulation of images is rooted in the art of photo manipulation, and photo manipulation is nearly as old as the advent of printed photographs. Nicéphore Niépce created one of the earliest known photographs in 1825 and then produced the infamous View from the Window at Le Gras photograph (made with a camera obscura) sometime between 1825 and 1827 (FIGURE S3.1).
