While the heavy power consumption of Class A amplifiers may
perhaps be tolerable in amplifiers worked from the mains, and at
least has the merit of being constant, it is quite intolerable when
batteries are used, their cost per unit being enormously greater. The
particularly undesirable feature is the continuance of full power
consumption during quiet periods, so that the average efficiency is
very low indeed.
