They need not be at regular intervals. 'Voltage positive' is taken to
mean 1, so is read from the first collector in each bistable, but
equally well it could be 'transistor on' or 'current flowing' and read
from the second. The second bistable is triggered at the even-
numbered input pulses and indicates the second digit. If each
bistable has, say, a lamp to show whether its second half is on or off
