The
Vacuum Diode Valve
To overcome
the
stoppage caused
by the
negative space charge
it is
necessary
to
apply
a
positive potential. This
is
introduced into
the
valve
by
means
of the
second electrode,
a
metal plate
or
cylinder
called
the anode.
When
the
anode
is
made positive relative
to the
cathode,
it
attracts
electrons from
the
space charge, causing
its
repulsion
to
diminish
so
that more electrons come forward from
the
cathode.
In
this
way
current
can
flow through
the
valve
and
round
a
circuit such
as in Fig.
9.1.
But if
the battery
is
reversed,
so
that
the
anode
is
more negative
