In 1987, a report commissioned by the United Nations (WCED 1987), Our common future, placed the issue of environmental sustainability firmly on the political agenda. Sustainability was set to become the buzzword of the 1990s. But what exactly do we mean by sustainability and how is it to be achieved? Is it compatible with economic growth and development? What is the relationship, if any, between our use of technology and environmental sustainability?
The concept of sustainability is a little like beauty—it’s very much in the eye of the beholder and there is a confusing societal mix of perspectives of sustainability. It’s useful to have some kind of classification scheme.
