Your Personal .xinitrc File
Changing the .xinitrc file in your home directory is the primary way of making changes to the basic X-Windows setup. One of the things controlled by this file is which window manager is used by X-Windows. Other attributes that you can control from this file include causing certain applications to start automatically every time you run X-Windows, setting the background color of the screen, and setting an image to display in the background. Each of these operations will be covered separately in the sections to follow. All of them will involve making changes to your personal .xinitrc file.
