Wear and Lubrication
The studies of wear and lubrication are traditionally included in tribology.
According to an accepted point of view, friction and wear constitute two
components of the same irreversible process of deterioration during sliding.
While wear is the term for the “visible” deterioration of the material result-
ing in the removal of material from the surface, friction is just the dissipation
of energy. Lubrication is used to control both friction and wear.
