Self-Lubrication
In the preceding chapters we discussed several self-organizing mechanisms
induced by friction. It is important to understand structure–property rela-
tionships involved in these mechanisms in order to be able to embed such
mechanisms into novel smart materials. Such materials with the capacity
for self-organization have begun to emerge. They are referred to as self-
lubrication, self-healing, and self-cleaning materials. In this chapter we dis-
cuss principles of self-organization at the interface and existing approaches
to self-lubrication.
