I WAS BORN on 3 July 1947 into a Sikh family in Gujranwala, now part of Pakistan, during the partition of India into two states after the second world war. My father, a prominent lawyer who campaigned against the break-up of our nation into states divided along religious lines, had been killed by pro-partition fanatics on 5 March. My mother was left alone with eight children aged from 2 to 14, including myself; a new-born, posthumous child.

We lived in Multan, a town that was to become part of Muslim Pakistan on 14 August 1947. Tension was high and violence had become commonplace. Like countless other non-Muslim families, we had to get out.
