Fuel flexibility with dual-fuel engines

Jacob Klimstra     Jacob Klimstra Consultancy, Broeksterwald, The Netherlands

Abstract

Modern dual-fuel reciprocating internal-combustion engines can share high fuel efficiency with the possibility to use liquid fuels as well as gaseous fuels. The liquid fuels can range from light fuel oil to heavy fuel oil, whereas bio oils can also be used. The gaseous fuels can range from biogas via natural gas to, in special engines, even flare gas. In each case, care should be taken that the engine is properly tuned to the relevant fuel. Such engines can play an important role in the transition towards an economy based on an increasingly sustainable energy supply.
