CHAPTER 5: CREATE FLOW BY ELIMINATING WASTE
Introduction
Waste inhibits flow. This is true of litter on motorways, ‘fatbergs’ in sewers, excessive production being kept in warehouses, or IT programmers being asked to write code that is not needed and will never be used. Other examples include excessive emails and meetings. In all these cases the normal flow has been interrupted because of waste.
By eliminating waste, we speed the process of transforming raw material into customer value. Waste is also uncompetitive, because if we have waste that competitors do not, they will be able to go to market quicker and with lower costs.
