As shown in Chapter 6, there are major differences between downlink and uplink in LTE, including different transmission and multiple access schemes, and different types of channel and control information, which result, in different physical layer processing. Low complexity and high power efficiency are among the major factors for the transmitter design in the uplink. As a result, the multiple access in the uplink is based on SC-FDMA due to its low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared to OFDMA, which subsequently has an impact on the resource allocation and baseband signal generation.
