493Machining Process Selection
The principal causes of surface alterations produced by the machining pro-
cesses are
1. High temperatures and high temperature gradients
2. Plastic deformation (PD)
3. Chemical reactions and subsequent absorption into the machined
surface
4. Excessive machining current densities
5. Excessive energy densities
Table 16.7 summarizes the possible surface effects by different machining
processes of some engineering metals and alloys.
