7.1. Introduction

In Chapter 2 we presented a general methodology for algorithm development and testing. Chapters 3 through 6 described mathematical models that are used to either derive (to be explained more fully in Chapter 8) or to motivate an algorithm. In this chapter we assume that an algorithm has been proposed and therefore, wish to determine its performance. This requires a choice of a performance criterion and subsequent testing to determine the performance with respect to the chosen criterion.
