The process of change in psychoanalysis cannot be explained only in terms of the interpretive work of understanding unconscious content. The part played by the meeting of unmet needs is also taken into account — through the provision of a ‘second chance’ to attend to the effects of trauma and to negotiate outstanding developmental tasks. The essential differences between this meeting of needs in psychoanalysis and any attempt at providing a ‘corrective emotional experience’ are also considered.
