An American giant, John Deere, has been progressively redesigning industrial equipment—such as tractors, combine harvesters, planters, tillers, sprayers, cutters, scrapers, and loaders—with digital functionality. In the mid-1990s, Deere set up a dedicated digital team that introduced a GPS-steered tractor, giving farmers time back to focus on high-value activities that can’t be automated. This innovation enabled the company to tag geospatial locations on every sensor on its vehicles. Armed with GPS-linked sensors, Deere can track the critical steps of agricultural work—planting seeds, fertilizing fields, and harvesting crops—and assess what’s working well.
